The use of diagram 550.1 should alert drivers of where it is common for accompanied or ridden horses crossing or using the road ahead. This is common in country lanes or where bridleways cross a road. This warning sign can be used with a supplementary plate stating ‘For’ and the distance horses may be a potential hazard in the road. Where horses are known to cross the road ahead, a distance plate to the crossing with a left or right arrow may be used, but please refer to the TSRGD Traffic Signs Manual, Chapter 4 on page 53 for more details on informal crossings.
